Most families arrive at this question late, and that is entirely normal. The stone was set years ago, the inscription said what it could, and then somewhere between a birthday and an anniversary it starts to feel thin. Two dates and a surname is not much of an account of a life.

Do you need permission first?

There are two permissions, and people usually think about only one of them.

The first is the cemetery's. When you buy a plot you generally buy the right of interment rather than the land itself, and the cemetery keeps authority over what appears on it. In practice most cemeteries have no objection to a small adhesive plaque on a monument the family already owns. Objections cluster around anything that changes the footprint: ground stakes, standing signs, anything a mower has to steer around.

Ask specifically, because the phrasing changes the answer. A question put as do you allow QR codes invites a cautious no from someone who has not thought about it. Headstones are frequently owned jointly in practice if not in law, and a sibling who was not consulted can turn a kind gesture into a decade of quiet resentment. One phone call in advance settles it.

If the marker was supplied by a government veterans program, treat that as the stricter case and ask before attaching anything at all. Those markers tend to carry their own rules about alterations, and the cemetery office will know them.

Where on the stone to put it

Placement is decided by two things at once: where a visitor's hand naturally goes, and where the plaque will be left alone by weather and machinery. Those pull in opposite directions, so there is a real choice to make.

The front face, lower right, is the traditional spot and the most intuitive. Someone standing where visitors stand can hold a phone in front of it without kneeling or leaning across the grave, which matters more than it sounds when the person scanning is eighty. The tradeoff is exposure: full weather, full sun, and full visibility to anyone who dislikes the idea.

The base or plinth is the discreet option. It sits below the eye line, the stone above shelters it from direct rain, and it reads as part of the monument rather than as an addition to it. The tradeoffs are that turf creeps upward and can bury it, string trimmers work at exactly that height, and a visitor has to crouch.

The back of the stone is invisible from the path, which some cemeteries prefer and some families do too. Nobody will find it by accident, so it only works if the family says it is there.

Flat and lawn-level markers are the awkward case, because a horizontal surface collects rainwater, leaves and grass clippings, and anything lying on the code stops the scan. If the marker has a vase block, a raised border or a granite surround, put the plaque on a vertical face of it rather than on the top.

Whatever you choose, decide it at the graveside with the plaque in your hand, not from a photograph on a kitchen table. Stand where you would stand. Hold the phone where you would hold it. A two-inch code wants to be read from close range, so if you find yourself stepping back and squinting, the spot is wrong rather than the code.

Polished granite, marble, bronze and flat markers

Adhesive needs contact area, and contact area is a property of the surface rather than of the glue. It is the single biggest predictor of whether a plaque is still there in ten years.

Polished granite is the ideal case, and most modern headstones offer some. It is dense, close to non-porous at the polished face, and flat enough that a plate makes full contact across its whole back. If the stone has a polished panel anywhere, use it.

Sandblasted or frosted granite is the middle case. It bonds acceptably, but the texture reduces true contact area, so press harder and longer than feels necessary.

Rock-pitched and rough-cut granite is the difficult case. The adhesive touches only the high points, which can be a small fraction of the plate. Most rough-cut monuments have a polished margin or a smooth base somewhere. Find it rather than fighting the texture.

Marble, limestone and sandstone deserve real caution. They are softer, considerably more porous, and prone to shedding a thin flake of their own surface in a hard freeze, which takes the plaque with it. They also stain. funeral.com warns plainly that a strong adhesive is not always cemetery-friendly, and some adhesives can stain stone or fail after freeze-thaw cycles. On a historic marble marker the honest advice is not to glue anything to it. Use the granite base if there is one, a nearby bench, or a separate small marker set at ground level.

Bronze is trickier than it looks. Bronze markers carry an oxide layer and usually a wax or lacquer coating, so adhesive bonds to the coating rather than to the metal. Stripping the wax back changes the finish and starts fresh oxidation. The granite base a bronze marker is mounted on is the better target.

Field practice recognizes three approaches on gravestones: an adhesive plaque in stainless, ceramic or aluminum, a code engraved directly when the monument is made, and a ceramic memorial photo with the code integrated into it. For a stone that already exists, only the first and the last are practical.

Preparing the surface

Bring more than you think you need, because a second trip is an hour of your life. A small bottle of isopropyl alcohol, two lint-free cloths, a soft brush, plain water, a towel, masking tape and your phone will cover it.

  1. Brush loose grit, pollen and dead lichen off the target area with a soft brush. Never a wire brush.
  2. Wash the area with plain water. Skip household cleaners, which leave salts behind.
  3. Dry it completely, then give it longer. Stone that feels dry can still be holding moisture from a week of rain.
  4. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol. 3M recommends a 70/30 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water for preparing surfaces before applying its tapes.
  5. Let the alcohol flash off, then do not touch that patch again. Skin oil from one fingertip is enough to create a weak spot.

The National Park Service guidance for grave markers applies to the stone as much as to the plaque: soft brushes and gentle cleaners such as water or a neutral-pH non-ionic cleaner only, and never wire brushes, power washers or harsh cleaners such as bleach. Scrubbing a headstone hard enough to make it look new takes a layer of the stone away every time.

Applying it: temperature, pressure and cure time

This is the step where the outcome is decided, and it turns on conditions rather than on skill.

Pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesives work by flowing into the microscopic texture of a surface. Warmth helps them flow. Cold prevents it. 3M's published guidance for its VHB acrylic foam tapes gives an ideal application range of 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C) and a minimum of 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C). The tape on your plaque may differ in detail, but the physics is the same across the class. Below about 50°F the adhesive is too stiff to wet the stone, and a bond that never wetted the stone is the one found lying in the grass the following spring. Wait for a mild, dry day.

The same datasheet describes how the bond builds: roughly 50 percent of ultimate strength after 20 minutes, 90 percent after 24 hours and 100 percent after 72 hours. The plaque is holding almost immediately, is holding well within a day, and is fully cured by the end of the week.

  1. Dry-fit first. Hold the plaque in position, or tape it there with a loop of masking tape, and look at it from a few steps back.
  2. Mark two corners with small pieces of masking tape on the stone, so you can place it once and place it straight.
  3. Peel the liner. Do not touch the exposed adhesive, and do not set the plaque down face-first on anything.
  4. Place it in one movement. These tapes grab immediately and do not reposition without a fight.
  5. Press hard with your thumb across the entire face for 30 to 60 seconds. Pressure matters more than duration.
  6. Press again after five minutes, remove the guide tape, and then leave it alone for a day.

Then check something almost no guide mentions: cellular signal. Scan the code with Wi-Fi switched off. Plenty of cemeteries sit in poor coverage, and a link that resolves instantly in your driveway can spin for thirty seconds at the graveside. No provider can fix that, but you would rather know while you are standing there. Visitors can always scan and open the page once they are back in signal.

Last, look at what the visitor sees, on a phone, at the graveside. A page that reads beautifully on a laptop can be a wall of text on a handset. Can it be removed later?

Yes, though not casually, and that is by design. An adhesive strong enough to survive four winters is strong enough to resist a fingernail.

The method that works is patience. Warm the plaque gently with a hair dryer for a minute or two, which softens the acrylic. Then work a length of fishing line, dental floss or braided cord behind the plate and saw it back and forth, keeping the line tight against the stone. A thin plastic wedge of the kind sold for phone repair does the same job. Do not lever with a screwdriver, which chips granite.

Residue comes off polished granite with a citrus-based adhesive remover and a soft cloth. On unpolished or porous stone, be careful. Solvents can drive residue deeper and leave a shadow worse than what you started with. Test on a hidden area first, and accept that on marble or sandstone some outline may remain.

The honest version is simple. If perfect reversibility matters to you more than anything else, do not attach anything to the face of the stone. When to use a monument dealer instead

Doing it yourself is right for most families and wrong for some. Call a dealer if the stone is historic or marble, if the cemetery requires an approved contractor, if the monument needs resetting anyway, if you want the plaque mechanically pinned rather than bonded, or if you want the code cut into the granite itself.

One argument for attaching rather than engraving is rarely made and probably should be. A code cut into granite cannot be changed. If the web address behind it ever has to move, because a company is sold or a platform is retired, the stone is left holding a dead link and the only remedy is a stonemason.
